A Look into Ernest Hemingway's Childhood Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on the morning of July 21, 1899. He was born in the house of his grandfather, Ernest Hall, on his mother's side. Both of his grandfathers influenced the character of Ernest Hemingway as it developed. Ernest Hall, at the time of little Ernest's birth, was widowed and living in Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb about ten miles from Chicago.
